If you have lived on St Croix for a while, you will remember Island Dairy, a working dairy farm that provided fresh milk to the people of St Croix. While Island Dairy is no longer, the property houses Salt Great Pond, one of the newer restaurants on St Croix. Owners Chris and Kelly Booth are not newbies to the restaurant business with both having degrees from the Baltimore International College for Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management. They worked for many years in Maryland and New York before moving to St Croix and working in two local restaurants. Chris explains “The right place came to us at the right time in our lives, leading to Salt Great Pond.”
Chef Chris runs the back of the house, while Kelly expertly manages the front. “We wanted to bring to St Croix a place for the locals and new visitors to enjoy all that our island has to offer. Freshness and creativity are our favorite ingredients. Our menu is varied and the service is unmatched.” Chef Chris creates amazing food made from scratch with as many local ingredients as is possible. Together they have created a comfortable spot for relaxing and enjoying a cocktail in the gentle south shore breeze, while catching up with old friends or making new ones.
Catering mostly to locals, but welcoming tourists as well, Salt Great Pond is open for breakfast and lunch, and most recently opened for dinner. How does Shrimp & Ham Mac ‘n’ Cheese sound? Elbow pasta, gruyere mornay, herb and bacon, with a panko crusted top, served with a small green salad. Got your interest? Then how about this unconventional sandwich, the Beef Brisket Cubano with pineapple & Leatherback lager braised brisket, Jarlsberg swiss cheese, pickled red onion, kalamata olive tapenade, pepper relish, cilantro and harissa mayo…. mouthwatering!
